Satoko Miyahara at the exhibition
at 2018 Skate America
|
Satoko Miyahara debuted her programs for this
2019-20 season at the US International Classic competition held in Salt Lake
City in Utah, USA.
Both short and free programs are brilliantly
choreographed and showcasing the elegance and grace of Satoko. She has
steadily developed her maturity over last 6 years of her senior career, and
these two pieces perfectly work to present her culminating artistry.
Her free program is very special and
inspiring. It seems that Lori Nichol has an inexhaustible list of ideas
for choreographing for the best skaters in the world. In “Schindler’s
list and Prelude In C-sharp minor,” I saw quite a few posing and movements that
are very unusual for figure skating compositions, yet superbly depicting human
emotions.
John Bayless, a performer and composer, has
created beautiful classical crossover music by skillfully combining classic
music with other genre. He happened to turn on the TV on February 23,
2018 and noticed the music skated by a skater included the piano arrangement
that he composed and played himself.
It was Satoko performing “Madame Butterfly”
in the Gangneung Ice Arena on the last day of the figure skating event of the
Olympic games. She was emoting a marvelous rendition of Butterfly.
John asked to meet her in person, and five
months later in July 2018, they met in Toronto.
In this video, he speaks at length about Butterfly and Satoko’s performance.
In January this year 2019, John had a recital
in Tokyo. Satoko was a scheduled guest to appear and chat with him on the
stage. There she was so moved by his performance, especially the “Theme
From Schindler's List and Prelude In C-Sharp Minor.” So she decided to skate to
it for this season 2019-20.
Obviously technical glitches need to be
ironed out as she moves on into the season, but her performance in Salt Lake
City is already telling that it is one masterpiece of artwork, infused with
souls of three artists, Satoko, Lori and John.
Looking forward to the next performance at
Japan Open this weekend.
